Pankhurst statue listing upgraded

The statue of Emmeline Pankhust, in Westminster, has been given Grade II* listed status to mark the end of a year celebrating the centenary of women's suffrage

2018 marked 100 years since some women were given the right to vote. Since then, nearly 500 women have become MPs and millions have made their mark by exercising their right to vote.

Now, the statue of iconic suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst has become the first statue of a women in Westminster to be granted Grade II* listed status.

'New Dawn' by Jessica Taylor was installed in Westminster Hall, in Parliament. It is made up of a series of glass circles that represent 168 women who campaigned for the right to vote - and are now immortalised in Parliament.

Hundreds of thousands of people marched in towns and cities to mark the significant anniversary and show their support of the Suffragette movement.
